Leaders/Facilitators are encouraged to build ownership
into their Small Groups and one of the most effective
ways to do this is to provide opportunities for service.
The list below is not exhaustive, so as new needs
arise Small Group Leaders/Facilitators should encourage
unique and relevant ways for members to contribute.
There is no special order of importance in the list.
One person can serve in multiple roles.
Communications Coordinator
Contact members due to change in location/time/agenda,
etc. Relay information to members who miss meetings.
Be the primary spokesperson for announcements to the
small group and the liaison for the church. Ensure
public and written announcements are made to the church
on behalf of the Small Group activities. Create and
maintain a Small Group Calendar and coordinate with
church calendar. Solicit authors from among the Small
Group for a Small Group Newsletter. Extend a warm
welcome to newcomers in the group and ensure they
are informed of Small Group activities.
Group Prayer Journalist
Recommend different configurations for prayer time.
Keep journal of prayer requests and a log of God's
answers. Occasional reporting to the Group on God's
movement/answers. Serve as the primary link for urgent
prayer requests during the week. Contact other members
for prayer as appropriate. Preserve confidentiality
at all costs.
Refreshments Management
Ensure snacks and drinks are provided. Organize sign-up
sheet and/or volunteers. Assist with occasional meals
and ensure plates, cups, utensils, etc. are provided.
Assist host home with set up/clean up. Assist host
home with additional logistical matters and other
relevant areas of need.
Administer Children's Care
This includes children's needs spiritually as well
as other obvious needs such as supervision. Examples
include Bible instruction, prayer/praise, worship,
and even outreach (one might use the church-sponsored
missionaries to teach geography, culture, evangelism
to other religions, etc).
Entertainment/Hospitality Agent
This person has a creative streak, can never sit still,
and is loads of fun to be around! Actually, the Entertainment/Hospitality
Agent is one who is resourceful when it comes to finding
ways to promote fun and enjoyable activities for the
entire group. Noting Member's birthdays, anniversaries,
etc. is appropriate (Don't forget kids!). In addition,
this person will actively extend a warm and welcoming
hand to newcomers in the group.
Worship Leader
Ideally, this person can carry a tune! That's it.
No instrumentalist required (of course, a piano or
guitar would be welcomed). Lead in songs that are
familiar to most, biblically faithful, and accommodate
a "vertical focus." Other forms of worship
such as poetry, dynamic Scripture reading, and leading
in the Lord's Supper are encouraged as well.
Teach/Lead Discussion
The ability to understand and clearly communicate
God's truth in a manner that positively impacts peoples
thinking and living. Compassionately facilitate open
discussion with grace to all.
Organize Outreach/Inreach
Identify needs in the surrounding communities and
neighborhoods as well as needs inside the church.
Document bona fide needs and present findings to the
Group. Arrange outreach/inreach activities and follow-up
for evaluation and effectiveness.
